Signs your deck needs work

Decks sit outside through every season, and North Jersey winters are hard on wood. Look for:

  • Boards that are soft, cracked, splintered or loose
  • Railings that wobble or sit lower than they should
  • Stairs that bounce, lean or have loose treads
  • Posts rotting at the base or sitting on shifting footings
  • Rust on hangers, nails and bolts
  • A gap between the deck and the house, or water stains where they meet

What we build and repair

  • New deck design and construction
  • Full deck rebuilds and replacements
  • Footings, posts, beams and joists
  • Ledger flashing at the house
  • Wood or composite decking
  • Railings and guards
  • Stairs and landings
  • Board, railing and stair repairs

How we build a deck

  1. Plan the deck. We talk through how you will use it, measure the yard and the house, and give you a written estimate.
  2. Permit and layout. We confirm what your town requires, and work starts once the permit is in place. Then we lay out the footings.
  3. Footings and framing. Footings go below the frost line, then posts, beams and joists are installed with proper hardware.
  4. Ledger and flashing. Where the deck meets the house, the ledger is flashed and fastened so water cannot rot the framing.
  5. Decking, railings and stairs. Boards, guards and stairs go on, ready for inspection and for you to enjoy.

Deck repairs

Not every deck needs to come down. If the frame is sound, we can replace worn decking, rebuild stairs, install new railings and add hardware where it is missing. We check the posts, footings and ledger first, so you are not putting new boards on a frame that is about to fail.

Decks in Essex County and North Jersey

Backyards in Irvington and nearby towns are often compact, with decks that connect a back door to a small yard or a driveway. That makes the house connection and the stairs especially important. In New Jersey, every winter's freeze tests the footings, and summer humidity tests the wood, so solid framing and good drainage matter more than decoration.

Decks as part of the exterior

A new deck often goes with a new back or patio door. If the siding behind the deck is damaged, we can repair it at the same time; see our siding page.

Questions

Decks questions in Irvington, NJ

Yes. Under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code, building or completely replacing a deck requires a construction permit. Repairing non-structural parts, like replacing some deck boards, is generally ordinary maintenance. Your town's construction office has the final word.

If the framing, posts and footings are solid, replacing boards, railings or stairs is often enough. If joists are soft, the posts are rotting at the base or the deck pulls away from the house, it is time to rebuild.

The ledger is the board that attaches a deck to the house. If it is not flashed and fastened correctly, water rots the ledger and the house framing behind it, which is one of the most common causes of deck failure.

Pressure-treated wood costs less up front but needs regular sealing or staining. Composite costs more but does not need staining and resists rot and splinters. We go over both with you at the estimate.

Footings must sit below the frost line so the ground cannot heave them when it freezes. Shallow footings move every winter, which loosens the deck and its connection to the house.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable, but we build through most of the year. Booking during winter helps you have the deck ready for the warm season.
