Exterior Door Replacement in Irvington, NJ
A front door that sticks, lets in drafts or leaks at the threshold is more than an annoyance. We replace exterior doors and set them square, sealed and secure.
Signs your door needs replacing
Exterior doors take hard use every day and full weather on the outside. These are the signs it is time:
- Drafts or daylight around the edges, even with new weatherstripping
- A door that sticks, drags or will not latch without a shove
- Water or ice coming in at the threshold
- Soft or rotted wood at the bottom of the door, jambs or sill
- Locks and deadbolts that no longer line up
- Cracked panels, warped slabs or failed glass
Door work we do
- Entry door replacement
- Storm door installation
- Patio and sliding door replacement
- Back and side door replacement
- Rotted sill and jamb repairs
- Threshold flashing and sealing
- Weatherstripping and adjustment
- Exterior trim around the frame
How we replace an exterior door
- Measure the opening. We measure the rough opening, check if it is square and look at the sill and framing.
- Remove the old door. The old slab and frame come out, and we check for rot.
- Repair and flash. Damaged framing and sills are repaired, and the threshold is flashed so water drains out.
- Install level and plumb. The new door is shimmed, fastened and adjusted so it swings, seals and locks correctly.
- Seal and trim. Insulation, sealant and exterior trim close the gaps, and the door is weatherstripped.
Doors for North Jersey homes
Older homes around Irvington often have front doors facing the street with little overhang, so they take rain and sun directly. Over the years, water at the threshold rots the sill and the bottom of the jambs. We fix that wood before the new door goes in, because a new door in a rotted frame will not stay tight for long.
New Jersey's humid summers and dry, cold winters also move wood doors all year. A properly installed door, sealed into the wall and protected at the threshold, handles those swings without sticking or leaking.
Doors as part of the exterior
If your windows are also due for replacement, we can do them in the same project. If the siding around the door is damaged, see our siding page. Thinking about a back door that opens onto a new deck? We can plan both together.

Doors questions in Irvington, NJ
Look for daylight or drafts around the edges, a door that sticks or will not latch, water coming in at the threshold, soft or rotted wood at the bottom of the frame, and locks that no longer line up.
Wood doors and frames swell with humidity and shrink in dry, cold air. An old door that has been planed and adjusted many times may never fit well again. A new prehung door, set level and plumb, solves it.
A prehung door comes already mounted in its own frame with hinges. It lets us replace the whole unit and seal it properly into the opening, instead of fitting a new slab into an old, out-of-square frame.
Usually, yes. Leaks at the threshold come from a missing sill pan, a worn sweep or a rotted sill. We repair or replace the sill and flash the threshold so water drains to the outside.
Most entry doors are replaced in a single day, and the opening is closed and locked before we leave.
Yes. A storm door adds a layer of protection for the main door against rain, wind and sun, which is useful on exposed entrances.
